Question Timing help!

I'm having trouble setting the timing on my truck. I let it warm up, then unplugged the spout connector, set up the timing light and loosened the distributor bolt. Now the part that's I can't figure out. At first I could see the mark I was looking for but then lost it. When trying to turn the distributor to find it again I noticed i was all the sudden way off mark and when trying to reach the mark the motor would die. I didn't turn the distributor much at all in the proses. Just wondering if anyone could have an idea whats going on. thanks.

Also could the firing order be slightly off and the engine still run?

It was definitely the firing order. Only the 2 3 4 and 8 were on the right post. I'm absolutely amazed the truck ran like that.

Now the timing is set and the firing order corrected, the truck runs like a top.
