Default Timing at 65 BTDC

Hi new member here.

So here is the problem. I went to check my timing today and it reads about 65 degrees. This is using a dial timing light. So now do I retard the timing back to 10?

I was checking the timing because my truck occasionally bucks accelerating once it has warmed up.

The last time it bucked I read the following codes
KOEO: 52
Continuous: 72 and 73
KOER: 16, 21, 26, 29, 31, 41, 61, 63, 66 and 72

I checked the following due to the codes:
  • power steering pressure switch- replaced cap and hasn't come back
  • TP sensor- pass
  • EVP sensor- pass
  • Ignition circuit- need new coil
  • ECT- the gauge works fine
  • MAP and O2 I can't check

Things I have done:
  • replaced pcv valve
  • replaced pcv valve vent filter and air filter
  • replaced fuel filter
  • replaced spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor
  • seafoam
  • replaced radiator cap
  • replaced power steering cap
  • replaced the heater core
  • checked fluids and changed oil

Sorry for the long winded post. Thanks for any help.

Couldn't be 65 degrees.

Did you remove the SPOUT plug prior to checking your timing?

Did you perform the "Dynamic response test" during the KOER?

ECT SENSOR has has nothing to do w/ the gauge. It communicated directly to the ECU. Your confusing it w/ the Coolant Temp "SENDER". The SENDER work's w/ the guage.

Year/ engine/ tranny type???

For some reason my signature isn't showing but it's a 1995 4.9L with manual overdrive.

I think I undid the SPOUT is it near the distributor or the firewall? I unplugged the one near the fire wall.

Where is the ECT?

I believe that I did the dynamic response. According the Haynes manual you stomp on the gas.

See link: http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=28

In the vicinity of the thermocouple housing.

Let me explain what I mean by 65 degrees.

Using the timing light the mark doesn't show up until the dial is past 60 and off the scale. Then the mark is about an inch before the timing marks on the block.

According to Ford Fuel Injection I unhooked the SPOUT. The interesting thing is that when I first went to undo it the connection was already undone with plugs in both ends.

Twisting the distributor doesn't bring the timing back into the proper range.

I'm going to do the Ford Fuel Injection troubleshooting list.

I went to a friends and got the timing squared away. Turns out I wasn't using the actual timing marks.

For the bucking problem the engine starts to die. Most likely I'll just have a shop work on fixing the problem as it is a little out of my expertise.

16= Do you know what your warm Idle actually is? It's out of range, but high or low?
21= Was the engine at normal op temp during scan? If no, the reason for the code. If yes, replace the ECT sensor.

If you're still around, I'll finish your code list!

Shouldn't be too hard to figure this ou
t.

Don't use the timing marks on the block. (drivers side of engine)

The marks you want to use are on the passenger side. You may need to get in there with a wire brush to see them. Clean them up, then check your timing, you will certainly see the line on that side and it should be close to in range or the truck wouldn't run.

I had a problem with my timing also. My was way out but ran fine. Look very close at the balancer. The marks are actually on the balancer. It is a scale from -10 to 0 and 0 to 30. Make sure you remove the SPOUT connector to get an accurate reading. Once you put it back in then the computer will auto adjust it.

Look's like we lost em boy's. On his way to a shop w/ his checkbook in one hand & a jar of Vaseline in the other (He'll need it).

Too bad. He was well on his way to handling it himself & learning a lot about his truck in the process!
