Throttle Body

Default Throttle Body

My rpm's are all over the place since doing the CEL code test and im going to be pulling my throttle body off to replace the TPS. The rpms would go up and down slightly but since the test it goes up to 2k rpm then back down to where it will stall out of not moving. Driving down the road it runs 1500rpm which inturn keeps my speed up if im not on the brake.

My question is:
Standing in front of the truck looking at the throttle body on the right hand side there is a sensor or valve. I'm not sure what this is. It has a red and white wire. It has two bolts holding this sensor or valve to another metal piece that bolts to the throttle body. What is this and should I replace it while i've got the throttle body off. My CEL codes where 23, 10, 41, 53 and 33. Thank you.

your codes are: (according to my chilton's)
23: TP sensor out of selt-test range
10: ? could you mean 11?
41: no HEGO switching detected
53: TP circuit above maximum voltage
33: EGR valve opening not detected

It is helpful when posting trouble codes, if you don't look them up yourself, to at least specify which type of codes they are (ie KOEO, CM, KOER). There is a sticky at the top of this section which shows how to tell the codes apart.

It is also helpful to post your truck year and engine size. If I had to guess, the thing on the right side of your throttle body is the IAC (or IAB, same thing many names). More info here: http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=39 I had a problem similar to what you're describing, replacing the IAC cured the issue for me

I'm sorry, Im new to the forum. Ive got a 1990 F150 5.0L 4x4 reg cab long bed. I had looked the codes up but thought they may help others help me to figure why all of a sudden i'm having such a drastic change in the performance of my truck. When I first bought it it ran well. Then the rpms would go up and down a bit. Then it began to stall if I were backing up then going into drive. Now my rpms are up in the 2k's in park, 1500 driving and constantly stalling out now. And when it is in driving and moving the truck feels like its got the hiccups.

they were key on engine off codes. When I began to do the engine on test thats when the trouble with rpms began and hasn't stopped even out of test mode

sounds like a problem with your IAC and possibly TPS. I can't advise on the TPS since mine was fine, but you should definitely take off your IAC and have a look inside. It's easy to remove, I would disconnect the negative battery cable first to be safe. Just unplug the connector on the IAC and remove the 2 bolts holding it on. Be careful as you remove it, it should have a gasket which you may reuse if you don't damage it and it's in good condition. If you're sly you can run down to an auto parts store, pick up a new IAC, and slap it carefully on your truck and fire it up. If it fixes the problem, keep it; if not then just return it.

While you're in there, take a look in your throttle body for buildup of black deposits or other gunk. You may be due for a cleaning. If you clean it though, be sure you remove the IAC from the TB first (that's what probably screwed mine up)

If you have a multimeter you can test the TPS I believe, I'll check in my manual if you have one to find the procedure

Snap a couple pictures if you have a camera handy of the inside of the TB and IAC

I have replaced the tps and iac and cleaned the tb. After installation and a few miles the cel came back on....i disconnected the battery to reset the computer. I now get a code 63, tps below .6volt. Before it was above recommended voltage. Does any one know how to solve this issue?

you could have installed the tps sensor incorrectly. do you have a multimeter? if so you can test the tps.

As mentioned here, take of your TB. On it are 2 sensors, the IAC and the TPS. Low/stalling idle means your IAC is dirty from decades of filth. Clean it to fix your low idle/stalling problem. Take the IAC off and get some brake cleaner and clean it up on the inside until it looks brand new.

Next replace your old TPS. It's just old. When these go the idle either surges up and down OR races at high rpms.

Lastly clean your throttle body with a proper solvent nice and good both sides.

DO this and you should be running like new TPS and some cleaner is your only cost.

if you go this route, make sure to use a proper cleaner for your IAC. all my IAC problems started when I used the wrong kind of cleaner. it either caused the rubber plunger to swell and get stuck or it got into the solenoid and caused it to fail. either way, be careful with the IAC
