my temp guage when i start it goes all the way in the red but its not overheating but after i shut the truck off and then start back it goes back to normal? If it was a short in the wiring wouldn't stay at one reading or another?

 

Yes if it has a short it would be on hot all the time. check for loose or broke wire. or temp. sending unit.

 

try pulling out the temp sensor and cleaning it off with steel wool, then re-install. good luck.
