Default Sticky shifter

I have a 1992 F150 with the 5.7 and E4OD [257k miles and counting]
The truck does not get driven a lot but this past fall it sat for 3 months without moving.[we were out of state]
When I did get around to it the truck started and ran fine but it seems the column shifter has gotten quite stiff, as though it has rusted in place? A few years ago I replaced the column shifter ring? inside the column when it broke.
I noticed the new ring was reinforced where my old one had broken but I would like to avoid breaking it again.
Where should I look for rust removal or lubrication to free up the shifter? We live in humid [and winter salt] upstate New York so I am assuming it is a rust issue. Can I access the cable to lube it? Where else should I look?
Thanks in advance B

Not knowing if its a cable or linkage type of connection, disconnect at trans and now move the shifter thru its travel. If problem still persists at least we know is not internal, big bucks stuff. Now proceed, by process of elimination, to isolate the concern. Correct as needed.

Not to be jerk, but a ford is a 5.8 (aka 351w) a 5.7 is a gm 350.

Anyway, the '92 Should have cable linkage. Mine does. Just follow Bill's advice.
