Default starting problem ? fuel system problem ? i dunno !!!!

I have a 1988 f-150 and it seems to be having some issues . it starts and spudders and dies . If i try to start again right after i started it for the first time of the day it will not start at all . it will just crank and crank and crank and maybe if your lucky it will spudder for a second . I will try to give it some gas when it starts but if i give it to much it will instantly spudder and die . it rarelyyyyy revs higher then 2k , but the weird thing is , it does sometimes rev higher then 2k but like i said its rare . it really just sems like it is running out of gas . but i know for sure that it does have gas .

i have replaced the fuel filter .

im just trying to figure out what it could be before i invest in fuel pumps , fuel pressure gauge etc etc .

my truck did have two fuel tanks , i took the midship tank out because stale gas has been sitting in it for many years . that tank hasnt been used sense before i bought it . and i dont even know when that was . the truck ran great when i bought it and i never used the front (midship) tank . i always used the back tank , i have not put the front tank on yet because i dont want to buy another tank unless i truely have too .

any help would be VERRYYYYYY appreciated , because right now im driving a 1990 geo metro , not a very good ***** magnet. lol !
