When I go to start it about half the time, the starter won't engage. I have replaced the clutch switch and that didn't make a difference. If I jam the gear shift lever into different gears that is usually what gets the starter to engage.

Any ideas on what other pieces I need to replace?

(It's a 1993 F150, 5.0 with 5 speed manual, 2WD)

 

So your starter isn't doing anything?
Or is it spinning up but not turning the engine over?

Depending on which.....

- If you feel its easy for you to remove the starter. Take off and take to AutoZone or one of these places that will test it for you.

If the starter is always spinning up.....You may have a worn flywheel or missing teeth. Or a bad Starter.

 

Nope. Starter isn't spinning. It acts as though the battery has a low charge but the battery is charged up. Pretty much a mystrey at this point.

 

Sounds like a bad spot on the starter to me. I had this problem with a Park Avenue I use to own.

 

Jump the solenoid post with a screw driver and see if it spins up. MAKE SURE its not in gear because you'll be bypassing the neutral safety switch.

Solenoids are cheap- if it spins up when you jump it, you could start there, but you should just pull the starter and take it to be tested.

 

I am going to pull the starter. It makes sense that moving the gear shift would jog the starter slightly off its bad spot if that's what it is. Thanks guys.
