Default starter not engaging

truck is 1990 f150 inline 6 with the 5 speed.

sometimes when i start the truck the starter will spin and not engage. it has always started the second time but its starting to do this more often.

my understanding is its a bad solenoid. i looked the part up on rock auto and all it has is the fender mounted solenoid.
is that the one that would cause this problem or is it time for a new starter?
thanks.

Starter solenoid or bendix gear probably. Probably time for a new starter - before it leaves you stranded usually works best. Make sure the starter is for a manual trans, not auto, they're different.
