Default starter destruction

HI folks, I got a 1987 XLT Lariat manual 5 speed 4x4 last July. In August I replaced the starter and relay switch (next to batt on fender). In January it started destroying starters. Starts very easy, but as I release the key, an awful flywheel ring gear grinding noise for a fraction of a second. Counting August, it just ate #5. 4 & 5 went in less than a dozen starts. Oh, 3 different brands. The engine may have been replaced with another 5 liter. I'm losing the game of "Stump the Chump"

Or if they're are giving you a starter for an automatic they are different. Or maybe the wrong flywheel was installed on the engine swap?
