Default Speedo not working!

so ive been restoring a 1988 F-150 XLT Lariat. its a 4 wheel drive, 4 speed manual transmission. Ive got it all put together and running fine except the speedometer doesnt work. When i first had the truck i could see the needle jump up for a split second every once in a while when driving at highway speeds and then go back down to nothing. i replaced the cable first because it was looking sort of worn down at the square end of it (the end going into the tranny) but still the needle wouldnt move. so i checked out the little plastic drive gear on that goes down into the tranny and it was worn down real bad so i changed that and it still doesnt work. i can pull out the entire speed sensor and turn the gear with my fingers and i see the speedometer needle moving just fine. when i stick it all back into the transmission and try to drive, i get no results. im not sure where to look next. i dont want to have to open up the transmission to find out the issue but i guess i will if thats the problem.

if anyone has any ideas on what could be wrong, i would love to here em!
