Default soot in tail pipe.

I was wondering, what is sign of black soot in the tail pipe a sign of? Im posting this for my brother. He said it doesn't smoke at all but if he rubs is fingers on the inside of the tail pipe they come out black. Is it a bad sign?

I have a 87 302, I have a little bit of soot but hardly enough to coat my finger...

From the catalytic converters, most of these run clean until the cats, the soot is left over hydrocarbons that burn off in the cats and muffler and nothing really to worry about.
