Default something is wrong

I've got a 87 f150, 5.0, 5 speed, 4x4.... it runs great, but the other day as I'm going down the road it stalled on me... it just shut off, no spit or sputtering, it just shut off.... I coasted to the side of the road and tried to start it back up but there was nothing.. my head lights and interior lights all still worked but anything that was tied to the ignition was dead... I checked for loose wires and bad grounds but I didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary when I opened the hood.... even so I still wiggled some wires around and it didn't seem to help... After sitting for five minutes or so while I calmed myself down so I didn't push it over the edge of the bank to the river it started right up like nothing happened... I made it about a half mile down the road and it happened again. ...... it finally started back up and I made it home, the next morning it stalled once but started right back up and now it surges and bucks every now and then going down the road... any ideas what could be wrong?

Sounds like the symptoms of a bad PIP sensor in the distributor.
