Default Some advice needed

Hey! I have a 93 5.0 5 Speed with 4WD that I recently bought and am loving it. Brings back some nostalgia from the old fox body I had. Anyways, I am very interested in building a 351w and putting it in my truck for some added hp and torque. I have zero experience with the 351w and very little with Ford trucks in general. I am competent with auto mechanics, just new to Ford trucks. Shooting for 300hp and 350lbft. Those are just some numbers I’d like to achieve that seem reasonable. I would like to cut costs where I can but I am willing to pay for the right quality parts. I’ll just be daily driving the truck and don’t plan on towing anything heavy just a 14’ Jon boat every now and then. I am not worried about gas mileage at all. I still need to research what performance parts I would like or maybe y’all have some suggestions. Here are some of the basic questions that I have.

Is getting a junkyard 351w a good idea?

What are my limits power wise of my Transmission/4WD components? (I need to retain my 4WD)

Would a 351w directly bolt in with the wiring harness? Directly to my Transmission?

Do I need a different ECU? For instance a Megasquirt 3?

Is getting the engine bored over worth it?

Any advice would be appreciated or links to 351w swap/build threads.

Thanks,

Cory

the 302 is "built" much more often than the 351, for a multitude of reasons. Nothing wrong with the 351, just perceptions and preferences point to the 302. I would not waste time with a junkyard motor unless you know it and can check it out - running. Crate motors are often bargains, some have full warranty and bolt up.

just google 351 swaps and you will find thousands of opinions, tests and results, pricing and so on.

Put that & all the truck's OTHER details into your signature as this page explains:

What are you doing with the truck for which its current torque is insufficient?

What's the reason for those numbers?

Then the stock engine will be more than sufficient.

It depends on the rest of the idea, and the condition of the engine. I generally make the engine run in the JY so I can do compression & oil pressure tests before buying.

They're plenty for the stock engine. Ford never offered the Mazda trans behind the stock 5.8L - what does that tell you about something with more torque than a stock 5.8L?

Not exactly, but it's easy to modify.

Yes, but that doesn't mean the trans can handle it.

Not IMO. Like most people, you seem to be judging the stock engines based on the condition of YOUR truck's current (28-year-old who-knows-how-many-miles who-knows-how-poorly-maintained) engine. That's not logical. I suggest you START by repairing the current engine, at least back to its recommended maintenance level. I have a 4.9L with a million actual miles, and it runs like-new because I maintain it. It will push my overweight Bronco up over 100mph any time I feel like letting it. I bought a non-running F250 with a 5.8L, repaired it, and it's running fine, too.

So before investing many hours & thou$and$ on a replacement engine that you're not familiar with, invest a few on the one you already have just making it run right. It might surprise you. Even if it doesn't, it'll be a good learning experience to familiarize you with your truck & these engines.
