Default Rough shifting

My 1993 f 150 2wd has some rough shifting, shifting up and shifting down (when I let go of gas). It kicks harder sometimes then others, especially when I give it more gas. Before I go and look into new transmissions what could this be? Any advice will help. Thank you

Start by pulling codes to see if anything is stored.
Most sensors can be tested with a voltmeter and a little research (check out easyautodiagnostics.com)
A bad sensor can cause what you're describing to happen. Likely culprits - TPS, VSS, RABS - or PSOM can also cause shift problems.
Bad wiring or connections to any of those can cause erratic shifts.
Rule out all the electronics before you throw money at a transmission that you may not need to replace.
