Default Replacing coolant Temp sensor

1992 f150 302. My engine would sometimes crank for awhile before starting if the engine was warm so I'm going ahead and replacing the coolant temp sensor.

the old sensor looks much different but I called the Ford dealer in town and got confirmation that what I have is the new updated part and # (got part off rockauto).

My question is the new part requires me to splice a new connector on, no big deal except the new plug has 2 white wires off it and the old plug went to a white wire with red stripe and a green wire with brown stripe. I'm thinking maybe it doesn't matter which wire matches up with what but I want to be sure.

What's the proper way to hook up this connector given the colours?

I'd take the new "clip" with white wire pig tails and line it up the same way as the old one would clip on, and splice the wires accordingly. But I agree that I don't think it matters. Just my opinion. Also, you might consider more Teflon tape on the threads. It also looks like you are going to have "fun" trying to get a deep well socket on that to install. Can't use a standard wrench. Ask me how I know that...

Thanks for the reply. I did end up doing just as you said with lining up with the old, so far so good but time will tell.

Looking at the photo now I think your right it could use a bit more Teflon tape but at the time I didn't even think of that as I was more worried about that connector. Worse case scenario it leaks and I can go back and do a better job.

Also your right very much so a pain to get a socket on there! Getting the old one out I used a socket but had a hard time using one when installing the new so I went with a combination wrench, hope I got it tight enough!
