A 400.00 kit will get you what stock rings and a gasket set? Go for a good build, That motor can handle 500 hp easy. Put in a good set of pistons and rods. Have the motor bored over .0020 or .0030. Do it right the first time and you will not be sorry. Yes it costs more, but its worth it. Also something to think about. The transmission. I am sure its seen better days too. While the engine is out have it built too to handle your new found power. Then once its all back together take it to a dyno and have it professionally tuned. Good luck......
The $400.00 kit has everything apparently, This kit includes Pistons, Rings, Gaskets, Cam Bearings, Rod Bearings, Main Bearings, Oil Pump, Freeze Plugs, Camshaft, Lifters, Prelube,Timing Set And Wrist pin Bushings where applicable.

form reading this thread i have a question. i was getting 13 MPG's in my truck about a week ago. then i ran some throttle body and fuel injector cleaner through her and suddenly started to get 6MPG's, 7 on a good day. would running the cleaner through it have caused the fuel mileage difference?

Hey kicksass;

You didn't say whether you ran the cleaner through the fuel system via the tank, or by disconnecting a fuel line, or through the intake. If you disconnected a fuel line and ran it that way, maybe some debris broke loose and is stuck in an injector nozzle causing it to stick open.

Has the MIL come on? One would think that with a mileage decrease like that, it would be lit, and black smoke would be coming out the tail pipe. Seems that you would be getting a runs rich code with a loss of mileage like that.

Let us know what you find,

You get what you pay for in rebuild kits, keep that in mind. GT40 heads are good, but not great. Depending on your plans for the truck, have a set of E7s cleaned up and just run them. I've seen cars pick up 25rwhp just by working over the E7s they came with.

Do not put header mufflers on the truck, it will sound terrible. Especially if you still plan on running the stock cam. There is no reason for them other than personal taste, and I'm not sure that justifies the noise. You will likely gain a bit of peak power with them at the sacrifice of low end driveability and throttle response.

If you feel like you have to have long tubes, run the exhaust another 10-15", put in a balance tube (h pipe) and then at the very least take it back to the rear axle and stick mufflers on it. On low revving motors like these, that added pipe length will do wonders for scavenging at low rpms.

Seafoam? Works like a charm. I've run it in every vehicle I've owned.

Likely caused the O2 sensor to flip out. How old is that?
