Best free tip is to watch your tachometer. Stay below 2,000rpm and your economy will be better. Do some searches on this forum... good ideas such as the electric fans. If you want to learn how the fuel economy fanatics do it, check out ecomodder.com. Most of the folks over there drive small cars but there are a few Ford full size trucks on there.

Rear end gears are a big thing. If all your driving is around town or pulling weight, you want lower (higher number) gears.
If the bulk of your driving is highway, you need higher (lower number) gears.
Highway gears in the city suck fuel because the engine has to work harder to pull away from a stop. And pull away from a stop again .. and again.. and again.
City gears suck fuel on the highway because your motor's gotta spin like crazy to keep you up to speed.

Your truck is getting about what it was rated to get....A good tune up, properly inflated tires, and a light right foot are your best bet to improve that.
