Default play in steering column

Truck was running great with one issue, sometimes when turning the steering wheel I would hear a cracking like noise, now the whole column is lose, I am able to wiggle it in all directions. The cracking is still there and steering is also harder now, the wheel doesn't return to center after turning a corner.

Also just had truck in to have one ball joint replaced, now after turning left left turn signal doesn't go off automatically.

I have a 1993 f150 302 5.0 4X4.. Thanks a lot too anyone who may be able to shed some light on this issue.

oh ps the issue started just before I had the truck in I thought it was a ball joint causing this issue but turns out I was wrong.. I'm far from a mechanic lol

Sounds like your steering column bolts are loose....lay on the floor and look up...there will be an aluminum plate that cradles the column...tighten them bolts up.

Default I had something similar...

Mine was more like a knocking noise but maybe it could be described as cracking. It turned out my brand new idler arm wasn't greased enough. Took almost 10 pumps from a gun. Noise is gone and steering is nice and easy. Gotta get rid of the play in my steering now and it will be perfect!

Anyway, check your idler arm for a grease zerk and grease it just in case. It may not be the problem but it's worth a try.

i have the same truck that had the same issue with the cracking and turn signals not working right. i had to replace the entire column. super easy as long as you take your time. the cracking for me was the little plastic cirlce inside the controls when the turn signal turns off and the buttons for the cruise control. it got so bad, that sometimes when i turned, my horn went off as well. it was like wires crossing. but since i've switched my steering column out (a few months ago now) she steers like new and the cruise and turn signals work like they should.

edit: the worst part about finding a column for our truck, minus the price, is i was told that the 93's will only take the steering column from a 92-93 only. made it that much harder to find. took me almost a month to find.
