Default oil pressure problem

1996 F150 5.8 auto 4x4
My newest problem is that sometimes on a cold start the oil pressure guage reads...well, nothing. After about half a mile, the guage reads normal pressure. The longest its ever taken to show pressure is about 2 miles. It doesn't gradually climb or fluctuate, its either all or nothing. The oil level is fine. I hope its the oil sending unit and not the oil pump. Any thoughts? Is the oil pump difficult to change out? Any help will be appreciated.

The oil pump is a fairly simple process to replace, however it does require removal of the oil pan, which can be tricky with the engine still in the truck If you don't hear any clattering from lack of oil in your engine until the gauge starts reading, I would suggest it's either the sending unit, or POSSIBLY the gauge. The sending unit is $5 at your local parts store, and it's located right next to the oil filter.

Have your oil pressure measured with a special tool on cold engine - usually oil pressure drops when the engine warms up, and you have it opposite way.
