Can I put a mechanical gauge in its hole or do I have to run a tee?

I think you need to run a tee

If you are going to eliminate the stock gauge you can just conect the new gauge to the hole where the sender was [1/4 NPT] but if you want to keep the factery gauge and idiot light then you need to tee it and reinstal the sender.

I ran a tee. Orielly Auto Parts put one together for me for about $5. I kept the original gauge working and added the mechanical.

Well I didn't hook the mechanical gauge up but I did replace the old sender for now. I think that may have been the problem.

I'd say you've had some oil loss there lol. Mine had blown out to the point that the sludge was almost gone and pouring oil like an oil filter with no gasket. The tee with the factory sender and the mechanical gauge is nice. I kept the dash gauge working and have the mechanical for piece of mind.

Also I used a 1" 1/16 6 point thin wall socket.

Yeah, couldn't find a standard socket when I did mine. The metric worked great though. Just went and looked and I used a 27mm deep socket.

That's what I was gonna use but mine is impact and it wouldn't bite also a 1 1/16 had to be a 6 point to work 12 slips.
