Hey all. Im new to the forum. My dad gave me his old 1987 4x4 f150 with the 300 six and a four speed. Its sittin on some 31 inch road tires. Longbed with dual tanks. The old truck has lots of battle scars.

It has a couple issues right off the bat.
Speedo doesnt work at all.
Rpm guage is inconsistent and buries itself past redline.
Anti lock dummy light is on.
Cruise doesnt work.
Bad vibration at certain speeds. Somewhere in the high end of third gear
And fourth gear is real boggy when climing hills.
The oil breather is soaked with oil and leakes onto the valve cover. Is that a pcv problem.
A/c doesnt work and i dont know what to recharge it with because of how old the truck is.
Other than that the truck runs fantastic. The 300 six is my favorite engine

I'd say Seafoam it, new plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap, and PCV valve and see where that gets you...

Welcome to the forum!

You will definately need a new pcv. Once the crankcase breather filter starts filling with oil, it is a sign that the pcv is no longer functional.

As far as the other issues, feel free to use the thread search to find solutions and how to's, because there are hundreds of other trucks on here just like yours that have had the same problems but have them fixed now. If you cant find any solutions, feel free to ask again

i'm not a ford guy, but as for the pcv valve issue...

i would go to autozone and get a can of brake clean, a new pcv valve(bout 7 bucks) and a new pcv filter.

while you're at it, pop your air cleaner and check to see if you need a new one, and maybe there is another pcv filter in there.

anyways, i'd remove the whole thing from the truck, and spray the can of brake clean into the hose, to clean the oil out of it. then, use a air gun and blow the hose dry.

install the new pcv valve and filters.

when it comes to the pcv valve, if you shake it and you can't hear a rattle going on inside it, then it's sticking and needs to be replaced.

as for the cruise, i've had cruise in every truck i've owned in the past 10 years and i've only used it 3-5 times between 3 trucks. dad taught me that if i got cruise on, and fall asleep at the wheel, then when i leave the pavement, it would be at full speed rather than slowing down a bit, which could be the difference from life and death.

course, it makes sense to me then and even now, but i'm old enough to know that if you're that tired... it's time to pull over.
