Default New cam?

I'm looking to get a new CAM for my truck. I have a 1996 Ford F-150 with a 351W, 4x4 and an auto transmission. I need to know the maximum specs for a cam that I can put in. I'm trying to put one in but keep most of my factory parts. Just trying to see what would work. Thank you in advance

I would send a private message to Conaski on this forum:

or start a thread on that forum

You can put just about any roller cam in it....Although you want one designed for low end torque.

My opinion would be to swap out the heads and intake manifold... With just that you will be pushing the stock 19 lb injectors and the stock 19lb mass air calibration to their limits.

Go any further then that and you will have to upgrade injectors and recalibrate the mass air to support the injectors.

Just swapping out the cam with the restrictive heads and intake manifold will not yield much gain....

The factory F4TE roller cam is a decent cam that is all ready in the truck... 1.7 Roller rockers would be a good upgrade...You may have to modify the Baffle that is connected to the valve covers

On a tight budget, the Marine Corp pay isn't all that great haha. So I'm trying to do a cost effective upgrade if you know what I mean

I'm already in the process of getting new injectors. How do you recalibrate the MAF

You have to purchase one that is calibrated to the injector size that you are getting....

If you do not have upgrades such as cam and heads. I would not worry about bigger injectors. The stock 19lb will handle those upgrades but will be maxed out. If you put 24lb or larger injectors on a pretty much stock truck it will not run correctly

Ok so when I get a cam and heads, bump to 24# injectors. You have any good combinations? Looking for decent heads, decent intake and a decent cam. When I say decent I mean priced lol

Cheapest Heads would be GT40P's they are factory bolt-ons using factory push rods rockers ect...Then GT40's....The main difference is the spark plug angles. They are found off of 96-2k+ 5.0L explorers... Also, 5.8L Ford Lightnings have GT40's They have 1/2" head bolt holes....

GT40Ps will not work with factory Manifolds. You will have to get specific headers to fit them. The GT40's will work fine with factory manifolds.

The 5.8L has a 1/2" head bolt while the 5.0's use smaller head bolts. You will have to get heads that have the head bolt holes drilled out to 1/2"

They sell them refurbished...They are factory parts....

-------------------------------------

Intake Manifolds....

Either Edelbrock truck intake. That is the easiest and direct bolt on.

-or- Swap over to a single throttle body design intake such as a Mustang or Ford Lightning. My opinion find a 351W Gt40 Lower Intake Manifold and get a 5.0L Ford Upper Explorer intake Manifold and rig it up to work. Or Ford Lightning upper intake manifold....You will have to have all the other parts such as throttle body...EGR spacer...Hoses...MOdfiy the throttle cable bracket...Air box tubing

-or- 351W Typhoon intake manifold...You will have to modify the throttle cable bracket and purchase other parts for it to work.

--------------------------

Cam....

Any of the 5.0L or 5.8L ---Roller--- Cam Shafts will work.... You will have to get hardened push rods and tougher Valve springs.....The factory heads can not handle any aftermarket cam shaft with over 400 lift if i remember correctly
