This is what the ECT Sensor looks like:http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=28 (Not to be confused w/ a Coolant Temperature Sender which I believe is a single wire & I know has nothing to do w/ ECU function, just the gauge)

If the my gauge is not working would that mean the sensor or the sender is bad?

No you need to do some troubleshooting guy.... If your not familiar with this process find someone who knows how to read a schematic diagram. You/they need a multi-meter and a test light.. Check your wiring for high resistance, which means it's grounded or shorted. If it's low or close to "0" then you know the wiring probably isn't your problem.. Check the gauge for serviceablity, if it's the analog type ground one of the terminals ands it should go to max, if it's not analog then you need to find out what the values are of it and the sensor... This is called the process of elimination in the troubleshooting world Good Luck..

Your first purchase should be a Repair/Maintenance manual from the parts store for your truck. Things get alot easier after that!
