Default My $500 Project

I couldnt pass up this deal on a 1992 F-150 Flareside XLT 4.9 Auto with 91,000 miles. So now we start with adressing all the issues. The greatest of all is the awful engine knock. Sounds like a rod bearing. I know a 4.9 with 91,000 miles and a bad engine may be unheard of but by the sound of this engine its probably best I just drop in a used 4.9 which I plan to do with a buddy one weekend soon. Then there are the odds and ends broken headlight, window regulator etc but it really will make a great truck the interior is great the body is great just needs a little love! Will posts pics as I go along.

Double check the fan clutch and water pump, by grabbing the fan and trying to get it to move side to side! I thought my 4.9 was knocking, but turned out to be a bad water pump.

Im almost %100 sure its a rod knock due to the way it reacts to increasing rpms and the sound on startup. But I will check on that thank you for the advice. I will try and get a video uploaded but my phone doesnt want to allow it.

Do the 92's have a digital odometer or an old 5 digit analog (6 if 10ths are included)? I ask because I'm in the market for an OBS truck and some advertise "87000" original miles. If it is only a 5 digit odometer, I really could be 187000 or 287000.

Sounds like you got a great deal either way.

The video of my engine knock, its pretty bad.

I will note that after an oil change with some lucas I have restored oil pressure. either that or the gauge started working :P

Yeah, that sounds pretty pooched. Might as well pull the rocker cover just to be sure it's not a top end thing but shopping for another 4.9 would be a plan. Truck looks worth the effort.
Just try not to be tempted to go all V8 swap or she'll add up fast.
Good running 4.9's are a dime a dozen around here.
