Lightbulb Modding Air Intake Idea

So after having this truck for a few months and after some money saved thought it was time to do some upgrades.
Its a 96 F150 xl 300ci I-6

First off to try and save some some money, I played with the idea for a while instead of buying a K&N kit, I already have a Ractive Superflow filter got from a friend and instead of fabricating an adapter for the MAF sensor body, that i went to the wreckers, bought another MAF sensor body and reversed it and bolted it to the original one, giving me the right diameter for the filter. Also buy another air box, cut and shape it to make a shield.

Any thoughts on this mod if it would even work? I haven't heard anything of it being tried before.

Thanks.

Problem is you will have to put the air filter in the fender or in front of the radiator, otherwise you are just pulling in hot air and will defeat the purpose of the cold air system, probably just easier putting in a kn replacement filter, doubt you will see any real performance or mileage, these motors do not respond like smaller engines.

Well the thing is that the K&N filters just end up exactly where the air box used to be because it asks to remove it completely. So basically the kit isn't getting cold air cause theirs nothing to protect it. What i want to do is use the bottom of the air box and fabricate it into a shield attached to the air intake at the bottom of it that runs out to the front grill, therefore giving it some colder air circulating while driving. I just want to know if someone has tried this sort of idea before by doubling the MAF sensor bodies end to end and use it as an adapter for the filter i have.

That might work, as long as you are getting cool air into the engine.

Mine's an older MAP truck, but with a little effort you can do anything - mine is a K&N conical filter, some exhaust pipe, and a couple hose clamps:

There are fairly large holes in the core support on either side of the radiator, but if you get too close to open air you'll risk sucking up water in the rain/snow.

I've noticed much cooler engine temps by removing the rubber seal along the back edge of the hood, and removing the plastic drip tray behind the bottom of the front bumper. Lets a lot more air flow through the engine bay.
