Default m5od-r2 help

hey, the tard before me had gear oil in my m5od-r2 (dont know if thats the cause of my problem........ the tranny is after all 20 years old)... i drained it and put mercon ATF in it, but it shifts weird... no whines or any noises, and all the gears work, but its hard to shift..... like from first to second i have to push the clutch in and wait in neutral for about 2 seconds before it will actually move into second... second is the worst, along with fourth, but all the other gears do it too, its like i cant physically push the shifter into the next gear without waiting... i dont know if its a clutch problem, a syncro problem, a linkage problem, or a combination of all three... other than having to shift slow, the tranny feels great.... downshifts arent as bad, but i havent tried to downshift fast yet (i dont really beat on my vehicles) please help, any input will be greatly appreciated!

edit: when i drained the gear oil, there were no chunks on the drain magnet... just the usual metal mud sludge crap...

Sounds sorta like the previous owner added the gear oil to cover up worn synchros.
