Don't be hate'in! 22+ @65mph. 18+ @ 80mph./// 87' 302 w/ 83K./ 87 octane.
I don't keep track of city driving mpg. Although I reset my odometer last refill, I'll post it in a couple day's if this thread's still kickin.

4.9 L6/3.55/M5R2 I bought back in January (nothing like a two hour drive in a used vehicle with four questionable tires/unknown maintenance/etc.. in 10 degree weather...) and have run four tanks through it. Averaged about 13.5 for the four.
Just got done with timing advance (16)/new plugs (motorcraft CC)/new plug wires (Taylor street thunder /new cap (taylor high per.)/new rotor (taylor high per.) and new MSD 48K coil.
Am making an eight hour round trip to New York's Mohawk valley on Monday - we will see if there is any difference. On the return trip I am pulling back a trailer load of wave runners - so we will see if it still goes up.

My co worker has a 95 F 150, original owner with 200k miles. He has the 6 cylinder and gets 19 mpg on the highway and 16 city. Get this, he still had his original brakes! He's an older gentleman as you can see.

I advocate 16 BTDC for healthy, well maintained engines, but I always stress "safety first"! I would also recommend (you won't see this very often) running 89 octane on the pulling leg of your journey! (may not be necessary, just good insurance)
Motorctaft C/C's are actually engineered to fail before piston damage occurs, But I wouldn't trust all my pistons to that statement. They're supposed to, that doesn't mean they will!
You'll notice your new base time will tend to dramatically improve it's ability to climb a grade more effortlessly, but watch for ping as you reach the crest of a grade & start to take your foot out of it.
Right about there, you may enter "Ping" city limits! It's a lot easier not reach ping threshold, than to drop back below it, once it has been crossed! A bottle of "Water Wetter" in your coolant system would be a VERY SMART idea, & I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it! It will make your coolent system much more effective at keeping you below "Ping" threshold!
$8. Your engine is worth it!
I've never had anybody come back & say they pooched their engine after the Ignition System/ timing bump. You don't want to be the ground breaker for that. The fact that it's tolerating 16 BTDC implies your engine's in good shape. Let's keep it that way!

I will probably throw in some water wetter (Redline?) before my trip to Texas in August - pulling back an 18' trailer with a 1953 Farmall SuperC on it...glad the truck does not have AC - I would be too tempted to use it...
Thanks again.
