Default Lost all of my Voltage

Just wondering if anyone can help with me. I have a 78 F150 and was driving down the road and lost lights and then the motor shut down and started up again. It kept doing this and then after I got home it just completley cut out. Now, if the battery is conected I get a very dim dome light and under the hood light until I turn the key on then I lose everything. When I checked the batery I am getting 12v but I also get 6v when I put the red lead of my tester on the ground and the ground lead to the frame. It looks like somethig is grounded out but not sure what it could be. any help would be great.

this may sound odd but stick the blade of a knife or flat head screwdriver between the neg battery post and the terminal and see if that changes anything when you turn the key to the on position. don't start the truck just put it to on. you can also try it on the positive side. i had issues like that and i needed new terminals.
