Default Loose Steering

Does anyone else have problems with loose steering? I can move my steering wheel about 2-3'' before I can hear and feel the PS pump working. This happens at a standstill and at 70mph. HELP!!! I have a new PS pump and Steering gear (a month old) both were new parts not rebuilt.

The play is more than likely in the column, but check your tie rods too.

Bad tie rods, bad drag link, low air in your tires or a mis-adjusted steering box.

Check for movement of the frame in the area where the steering box mounts, and inspect the engine crossmember for cracks and movement as well, these areas are known to cause problems, the steering box bolts can also loosen, and not make noise, but allow the box to squirm. I noticed when I went to 33" mud tires, that the rim would turn, then the tire would catch up, it made the steering feel loose. Stick your head out the window with the truck parked and turn the wheel, if its doing it, you ll see it.

Ah I see what you are talking about now Scraptor. I think its some of that and in the column. My tierods are fine, only about 2 years old. It not a very big issue, just a bit of a handful on bumpy highways.

I'm sure it could use some new shocks (struts? For cars?) and springs. I'll be sure to check out the engine crossmember really well also. I think some play comes from having 15" wheels and those fat 33x12.50's honestly. Air pressure is 37lbs all the way around, just above the 35psi reccomended. I did that to even out the tread wear, and make it a little stiffer for hauling and towing. Not too sure how To fix the slack if it is coming from the steering column, suggestions??
