Question Looking at my 4th 9th gen! transmission question.

i found a 1996 f150 4x4 I6 power everything a4od automatic transmission. it needs minor work like battery tires. the seller told me its been restored and frame painted looks amazing in the picture. anyways

the big issue it has is that when you shift into reverse you have to wait a while until it selects reverse. is that a simple fix or is the transmission toast?

I really would like some info on this before i show up. just to see if i can trouble shoot it before i pull the trigger.
picture below is the truck ill be seeing tomorrow.

it's an E4OD and mine always takes a couple seconds to actually engage in reverse and i've never had any issues

Its normal for early E4od's. There is a way to fix it. I'll have to look it up again

Well my 3rd f150 i got now has a reverse issue same transmission as the 96 im looking at. and the 93 just looses reverse after awhile. the truck has 300k on it but has been restored soo not sure if the engine or transmission was touched. I want to be sure its not going to explode on me if i get it haha. thank you for the info.

the owner says it takes like 5 seconds to engage reverse. he says its strange and hes owned it for 2 years...my guess is it started to do that when he owned it.

You keep saying A4OD, it's E4OD. Depending on when the tranny was actually made or last rebuilt it should already have the factory fix. If not, "a higher displacement front pump provides more fluid capacity for faster engagement of reverse and greater lube flow." That's what I've found on that issue.

so basically its low on fluid when it starts acting up like that? because that sounds about right.

Sounds like it. I'd love it if I could afford a nice 9th gen flareside, but I don't really need one anytime soon. Later down the line maybe.

Well I do not need 3 full size 4x4 f150s either but hey if i can i will. besides I might be trading my 93 xlt extended cab for it anyways. it seems the guy just wants to move on. to much bad memory's or something. what worries me is that he has not seen it in 4 months... all and all if it is a rust free cab i might just snag it for the body work alone for my other truck.
