I recently replaced my ignition lock cylinder and door lock cylinders, and now I would like to get a single key cut. I have heard this is possible, but also heard various stories of failure. They are aftermarket cylinders (Standard motor products). Here is a picture of the two keys. The ignition key is on top, door key on bottom. What all would I need to take to a locksmith to get a good key cut - just the keys, or the cylinders too? Could I just bring the truck?
The doors use the outer 5 cuts; the ignition uses the inner 6 ones, but they share the #6 cut. For a single key, that cut has to be identical. That's why some can & others can't be put onto the same key.
All a locksmith needs is the 2 keys - if they can be cut together, he can cut each one onto the other. If they can't, you'd need to give him the ignition lock cylinder to rebuild so its outermost tumbler matches the door key. Then he could cut it onto the door key, & scrap the ignition key. You can then get the fully-cut door key copied anywhere.
Took the keys and my truck into a local locksmith today - Unfortunately we could not get away with cutting a single key, so just as Steve83 suggested, we pulled the ignition lock cylinder and he rebuilt to the specs of the door key. Now the keys that used to only work for the door work for both the doors and ignition. $20 and about 15 minutes of time. Then he cut me some keys with genuine ford logos on them for another $10.
I also figured out the hard way that my factory anti-theft system definitely works - I unlocked the door without using the keyless fob to disable the system, and boom there she went. I guess I need to install those door lock connectors that disable the system when you unlock the door
