introduction and question
Hi,
I've got a 1982 CJ 8 with the good old 4.9, 4 speed, transfer case, and 9" rear out of a 1984 f 159 4x4. The 4 speed has the creeper first gear. It also has a dana 44 out of a ramcharger in the front. I ride it hard occasionally, having towed my brother's toyota out of a trail where he hydrolocked his engine , towed him all the way home, then drove 80 miles to my home. I then found out the rear u joint was gone except for 2 small nubs where the needle bearing caps used to be.
The other day, while trying to reverse, the shifter kind of popped out of my hand and it went into gear and stalled. long story short is that it's stuck in 3rd, and I can't get to 3rd. It'll go into other gears too and stall when I let the clutch out. I think I can take care getting it out of gear by removing the top plate, but isn't there a teflon piece that goes over the shifter "finger"?
I figure if I have that piece before I take it apart, I can just replace it all at once. does anyone have a part # handy for this?
Is there anything else I should look out for while I'm looking around?
Thanks,
Matt

Depending on what transmission you have, there are some with a **** that holds the shifter forks for reverse. If this has broken you might have jammed it into another gear and then popped the fork out of place. I have seen this on some of the NP 435 trannies with the same results.
