Default intank fuel pump

I have a 1988 f150with a 302 and have a problem. The high pressure inline pump started to wine and got louder and louder. So I replace it along with the fuel filter. Started the truck and after about 2 minutes or running the pump got really loud again. It sounds like it gurgles every once and a while. It got dark before I could check the fuel pressure. It drives fine, might be a tad down on power. The regulator is a after market adjustable unit. It is about a year old.

Would the truck run if the low pressure intank pump does not work? It does have two tanks and I run off the rear tank usually. It makes the noise no matter which tank is on. Anyone have any other idea why the high pressure pump would be so loud?

Thanks for any help.

Update: I checked the fuel pressure and have about 38 psi. I also checked both tanks. You can hear the pump in the rear tank but not the front. I guess the rear pump could be weak. Could the control valve that controls which tank the truck runs on cause any flow problems? I just can not figure out why the inline high pressure tank is so loud.

sounds like it's lossing it's prime. You front pumps pooched, why should the rear pump be that far behind? The front pump usually goes first because that's what most people run on.

The truck will run fine without the pump in the tank, it is basically just a booster pump, and helps to prime the hi pres. pump if you run out of gas. I have been running for long time on just the hi pressure pump without any problems at all.
