ignition switch questions

Default ignition switch questions

hey guys, on my 1990 f150 the alternator went bad and i replaced it, then tried to jump it off but when i got inside and turn the key it felt loose it will go from off to the end but would not start the strarter so i went and bought an ignition cylinder, put it in and same thing it will switch on the pump but thats the end of it. any ideas? im leaning towards the ignition switch, any ideas will be appreciated

Down on the bottom of the column under the dash on top of the column is a switch that the rod pushes to start it. Sounds like it either went bad or is out of adjustment. It's got slotted holes so it can slide up or down. Just two bolts hold it. OR the pot metal arm inside the column that the lock cyl pushes broke. Try the switch on the bottom first. It's easiest to try.

He's right I had the same problem last weak I took the steering column down and rethighten those two nuts problem solved.

It could be the upper ignition actuator. It's a pot metal piece that connects the rod from the ignition cylinder to the ignition switch. There are some good write ups on here how to fix it.

turn the key on and try to start it under the hood. see if it works.

it will start jumping the solonoid, i will take the cover off the steering shaft to check that rod, i think that might be the problem because i dont feel the spring back on the key its just a dead stop.

Be careful if u move it up toward the steering wheel it could start made that mistake on my dads van and almost ran over my wife
