Default Ignition Problem

My truck takes several times to start as many as 8. The key goes back to the off position. How do I know if it is the key actuator or the ignition box at the bottom of the steering colum. It looks as changing the key turning device would be a big job. Thanks in advance for all your input.

Thanks,

Dave

if the key is being 'pushed' back to off by itself it sounds like the spring in the key lock cylinder is pushing back too hard, maybe theres something in there or a bur thats holding the spring spacing too tight.
