mine did it real bad tonight. i had to 2 foot it tonight to keep it running.then as soon as i got back from the store. pulled in the drive was reved it up little then it came out of it. but when mine does it it sound like a really bad exhaust leak and nasty cam. it was smoking really bad today the idle was jumping up and down from 500 to 1000 rpm. i might have to try the ecm. i'll just go to a junk yard and swap them out. the exhaust leak sound is coming from the head to me sounds like a loose rocker arm really loud tick. then when it comes out of the nasty idle it. isn't that loud.

my dads a machinist, him and i got to talking and where starting to think it interal problem. worn valve seat, and guides or burnt piston. will make that sound and run like that until it warms up alittle. his truck had a burnt piston in it and it did the same thing, i know my motor is bad leaks oil, and burns oil been pushed really hard, cause was once a plow truck. so i think i'm just gonna do a tare down and rebuild the dang thing and put new sensors on. but i go back to school on the 14th so i will check the compression there and that will tell me what i need to do

yeah your situation does sound internal. i dont think i have that problem though i only have 25k on the motorcraft crate engine so i'll have to start diagnosing mine again, but good luck with the tear down ,at least its an easy engine to do it to
