I6 MPG Mods

OK, I can see everything Dr Bowtie listed as good reasons MPG increased. Except for the motor oil and trans fluid. Do those really help MPG? If so, how much?

Many of us have done the lightweight synthetic fluids along with other mods at the same time, eliminating the ability to judge just the fluids. You'd have to do the oil first and record mpg. Then the tranny and record mpg. Then the diff(s) and record mpg. To me, it wasn't about the mpg's as much as it was that water moves much faster than oil. With that mind set, lighter weight fluids should move better than heavy weight fluids and reach the top side of the motor faster providing better startup protection which is where most of our wear comes from. To me personally, it seems that the 10w30 synthetic quietened down the few rattles that I had, less dry starts and the engine temps dropped by a few degrees. How much will a thinner oil help compared to a thicker oil? I think it helped me allot in a number of areas.

Yikes! I also just did a quick few searches on Amazon for all of the stuff dr bowtie suggests. Almost $500 worth of products (The most expensive being the MSD 6A spark box and MSD Street Fire Coil for $225)! However, if MPG goes from 14 to 24, it's well worth it.

Dr. Bowtie gets about 1 more mpg than I do and I don't have the MSD spark box or the Street Fire Coil. The coil can be had all day long at Autozone or Oreilly for about $50 and will work by itself. I'm running new distributor, cap rotor and a new factory coil and get the 21mpg. Dr.Bowtie has been a great help to me, but I think the MSD Spark Box is a "Play Pretty"! LOL
Edit, the last I saw, Dr. Bowtie was up to around 22mpg. I hadn't seen the 24mpg. Maybe I need to delve a little deeper into the box and coil.

New 02 sensor and leaning on the timing the best i've done is 26mpg at 65mph
with 34 psi in the tires I could probably go 36-38 psi in the tires and coax more but I dont like the harder ride.
there have been some to hit 30 mpg but you're doing hard mods... like raising compression and cam swap...

My dad took my 08 scion xb on a mini road trip and got 34 mpg. The norm for me is 29.
I drove with him the other day and understood how he did it. Our zero to 30 time must have been 30 seconds. It was the slowest most methodical car I've ever ridden in....not joking very weird taking off at 10 percent throttle.

It's a Canadian thing eh!
I should probably hook up the scan tool and see how well my O2 sensors are operating since I have no idea when they were last changed.
