Default How many cats?

How many catalytic converters are supposed to be on an 89 f150 5.8? The owner before me had true dual pipes ran and now that I have to get it inspected it needs a catalytic converter. As far as I know everything except the exhaust is stock, can I run one high flow catalytic converter and go 2 to 1 and back to 2 or will I need one catalytic converter for each exhaust pipe? Where I live we dont have emissions testing but all vehicles are required to have a catalytic converter upon visual inspection of the exhaust.

Just get two gutted cats and put em on each pipe. That way you'll keep the sound actually make it sound a little better, and it'll pass visual inspection

How hard is it to gut a cat? I'm going to have to buy the cats new, exhaust shops around here won't touch a cat if it looks used.

Not that difficult but a waste of money to do it to brand new cats.

Take it in for the inspection before doing any work. If something major is found to fail they might be more sympathetic with any smaller issues and let them slide. Im sure the retest is free.

Depends where you are. When I was in NC it was like...11 cents or something little like that.

Around here the retest is free as long as it has been completed within a certain amount of days. Also if it fails at one inspection station you can't take it anywhere else to inspect it, the station that failed the vehicle has to certify the work was done and it was fixed. All inspection stations in my area are not sympathetic, too many shops around here have been busted for not inspecting vehicles correctly so now they are all pretty strict.
