I have a 96 f150 and need to know how to remove the shifter because I'm dropping the trans.

 

What transmission?

 

If it is a 5-speed manual, Pull the nut off and place it back on the opposite side of the bolt, and tighten it up. That will pull the bolt out allowing the shifter to slip off of the stubby shaft.

This is covered in your Haynes Repair Manual that you purchased because you realized that would be the best thing you ever bought for your truck.
