Default Help! Thermostat issues!

Hello All,

I just got a 1995 F150 4x4 with the 5.8l and 125,000 miles about a week ago. I noticed the heat wasnt blowing as hot as it should and the engine temp was always hovering just above the cold mark on the factory gauge.

So today I stoped by and picked up a new thermostat, factory 192 degree.

I also figured while I was at it, flush the system and replace the radiator cap.

I got the thermostat in with no issues, along with a new gasket. Drained the coolant, added a full dose of water as per the PEAK cleaner. Started the truck and notice it was spewing out of the bottom area of the thermostat housing.

Cut the truck off, took it all apart, re-installed, re-tightened everything including hose clamps, 3 times, but still getting the same issue!?

Any ideas??

Thanks

Sounds like the thermostat might be slipping out of its groove, always happens, be careful and keep an eye on it when assembling, or put a couple of dabs of grease on the thermostat to hold it in place in its groove.

Well It looks like the stock one, slightly different... Yea keeping it center is a pain, I will try the dab of grease trick. Also just to confirm, the coil side of the thermostat goes in towards the engine correct? Does the gasket go in first, then the thermostat, or the thermostat, then the gasket?

Thanks for all the help!

I cracked my aluminum Thermostat housing on my 95 4.9L once by tightening the 2 bolts down with the thermostat not in place correctly. You might check for this. Hopefully, this isn't what it is.

This happened to me 3 times before I got the thermostat to sit right and seal. There's a SMALL lip in the housing that the outer ring of the stat needs to rest on. A lot of the time, the stat will slide down and the outer ring on it will be in front of the groove it should sit on, leading to no seal. It's annoying as hell, but just keep at it and you'll get it eventually lol

exactly! i usually dab a little RTV on the recess to hold the stat in place, then dab a little more on the gasket surface to hold the gasket in place before the install.

SIDE NOTE: i just put a new t-stat in mine and had an AWEFUL time getting it burped, it kept overheating with steam and emptying the radiator thru the overflow bottle... finally i drilled a 1/8th inch hole in the top of the stat to let it bleed the steam and that fixed the problem for me... hope this helps someone.
