If you are replacing the ball joint a new boot will be include. To remove the tie rods without trashing the boot or threads, loosen the nut until the castle is above the tie rod. Then using two hammers hold one on one side of the tie rod and hit the tie rod with the other hammer, remember to only hit the part where the shaft of the tie rod end goes through the knuckle and not the actual tie rod.

I was able to buy a ball joint press from Harbor Freight and it worked great when I did my own. Now I have one that I can use on future vehicles.

Unfortunately, I haven't yet found a good Canadian supplier with prices like the US. Also, the US companies usually charge an extra $40/$50 for shipping to Canada and you have to sometimes phone them with your order.

Most times I don't care about damaging the old ball joints. I always replace both - especially on a high mileage vehicle with sealed factory units. I figure the savings on labor by doing it myself more than covers the costs of new parts. Besides, you've got everything apart - the hardest part is done. May as well do a complete job at this time.
