Help Please
Ok guys im new to this forum and i need some answers so i figured what a better place to ask for help on my F-150 than this place. so i have a 94 F-150 4x4 with the 5.8W AT. So my transmission went out on me on august 28th no reverse and every other gear was slipping so i put in a used transmission that had been inspected and everything checked out good. I went through all the gears and it shifted better than ever and was quiet an just great. So i went for a drive to go duck hunting about 120 miles and i get to my spot and all of a sudden i don't have reverse i could feel it lock in gear and it would roll forward about 6-8 inches then lock up like it was in gear but it wasn't getting any power to the tires. so i called a buddy and he came to pull me out of his driveway and the rear tires were locked up with the gear selector in neutral
. so i just go to sleep and wake up early the next morning to try and diagnose the problem i jump in and put it in reverse and to my amazement it goes in reverse!! so i hop in and start driving home and all of a sudden my check engine light comes on and i feel and hear i vibration so i slow down and start to pull off the road when all of a sudden i hear a clunk and my rear end completely locks up and skids to a stop. so i get towed to a shop and pull the drive shaft off and the rear end is good. I then lock in the hubs to see if it will drive with the front tires in reverse and it wouldn't and when the hubs were locked and the transmission in neutral the front tires would not roll backwards!! so i locate a transfer case and switch it out and still no reverse so now im clueless unless i got duped and received a bad tranny. Anyone else have any similar problems any info would be great help. Thanks Nash

With the main drive shaft off, put e brake on, turn key take trans out of gear, turn the output shaft to the transfer case and see if anything is grinding or binding, could possibly be the transfer case, the tcase actually turns the driveshaft.
Yea I thought it was the transfer case also so I switched it out with another one and checked mine and mine was free spinning and really clean inside and with the new one in the truck it still will not roll backwards in neutral and reverse still does not work that is why I'm stumped along with 3 mechanics that I have talked to. Nobody can put a finger on the same solution everyone tguinks its something different which really doesn't help me. Would a bad mlps sensorr cause this problem or a bad solenoidpack cause this.
possible something electronic, but usually the trans will throw a code, but with the drive shaft disconnected, and the 4x4 out, still not be able to roll, sounds like something mechanical, I can see if the trans is hooked up, possible trans, I would look elsewhere. Might be a long shot but pull the rear cover off just to check.
I think; it's the transmission.
You installed a used tranny; Read story below.
now you know you have to get the original transmission rebuilt, sorry.

It would be a good idea to remove the rear differential cover and ensure the pin has not slid out and down from the differential, and that is what the locking up/binding actually is; as dirtcrew51m said.

SHORT STORY -
2000 Tahoe Z71 4WD with the 4L60E 4-speed automatic:
I had the original transmission's fluid & filter changed the last time at 183K miles, drove it 30-35 miles and then the next day; No 3rd or od,
it had a strong 1st, 2nd and Reverse, just no 3rd or 4th gears.
Replaced the common things, valve body electric parts , fluid & filter again, solenoids. etc. and still no 3rd or 4th gear, I actually drove it slow pulling a trailer on back-roads for a month, and then finally had it rebuilt for $800. at a Dealership Transmission Guy's backyard shop on a weekend,
I had my fluid-shop Buddy remove it and reinstall it for $400.
but I gave him a $100. TIP because of travel time.
I've already put over 13K miles on it and no problems.
I know; I'm talking about a GM transmission here, just saying that you can NEVER tell when a high mileage transmission will go out.
