Default Help me out!

So I bought a 1995 4.9 F150 XL from the Florida State Prison system. I figured they probably stayed on top of their maintanance and didnt do a hell of a lot with it and got it at a good price. I love the old pre1997 body style. I wanted this truck for my tree service. I wanted to restore it make it look sharp with black red and chrome. The Angry Aaron's Tree Care truck. The whole city would notice it!! But here's the **** part...

I finally registed it..put a hitch on it and wired it for the trailet lights. Go pick up my trailer from the yard to take to the dump and unload. Its a short trip. This was the moment of truth. The Angry F-150s first load.

I hook up the trailer. Shut overdrive. Hit the gas...nothing. Engine reving but not going anywhere. So i floor it. And it slowly creeps forward. And gradually picks up momentum. Sounding like **** the whole way. Once its up to 45 mph it pulls and runs half way decent. At this point i think the 3.08 gears gotta go sooner rather than later. Truck ran pretty good up until i hooked up the trailer.

So after i get it back to the yard. Disconnect and leave. The truck still taking off slow shifting harshly etc.

So long story about to end. Here is what i found is going on. When i turn over drive off its putting the tranny into limp mode. And it stays in limp mode until I turn the engine off and turn it back on. I pick the trailer up today just for s**** and giggles and I hooked it up and I did not turn overdrive off, and it pulled the trailer great and. Not perfect but it did a good job. But pulling a trailer with overdrive on is going to ruin the transmission. So why the hell is turning overdrive off causing my transmission to go into limp mode. Makes no sense overdrive works fine while I'm driving. No check engine light is on and I'm not getting any codes. Does anybody have any idea what the hell could be causing this?

Welcome to the site!
Perhaps putting too much confidence in the previous maintenance of the truck. How many miles, and what color is the tranny fluid - more towards cherry red, or more towards S.O.L. chocolate brown?
Haven't dealt with the E4OD trannies - perhaps other members can chime in on whether there's a trick to pulling any double-secret tranny codes, if any?
