Default HELP. Distributor Cap Mechanical Misalignment

Today, I removed the entire distributor cap assembly so I could replace the pushrod cover gasket on my ‘89 F150 4.9L. I marked each sparkplug wire and relevant terminal positions. Drew out a diagram and took a couple pics. I even marked on the side of the cap facing away from the engine. However I think I was supposed to take note of the exact position of the rotary dial. Well stupid me just pulled out the dist cap rotary assembly including the shaft. It spun freely and I wasn’t thinking too much about it at the time. When I assembled everything back together, my truck ran weird. It idled funny, it stalled out three times during my test drive. I spoke to my father since he is a retired mechanic. I discussed the symptoms and he ruled out the dist cap mechanical misalignment. Thats what I thought but wasn’t sure before I spoke to him. Since that’s the culprit, what is the best way to get #1 piston at TDCC without having to dissemble a whole lot things? I looked on the cam pulley and there are two separate marks. One is a red and the other one is some notch. Which one is the timing mark? I know barring the engine over is one way. The the degree marks are etched above the cam pulley. I have somewhat idea of how to correct my f**k up. However I like to know the best ways to tackle this without having to take my truck to a shop. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

There's no point starting 2 threads on the same BBS for the same problem on the same truck.
