Default help 94 f150 has no power

My trucks engine revs high but is hard to change and stay in a gear under the load of its own weight. it is automatic. 5.0 this prob. Is even worse on the expressway. While on the express way I cannot go past 50mph unless going downhill because thetrans. Wont shift to its last gear. I have no idea what is causing this. Any and all ideas welcome.
Thx.

Low mileage to be sure but if the truck has a history of towing trailers......

For God's sake don't take it to a transmission franchise shop they will feed you a pile of crap and rip you off. I have always found, in my area at least the dealers, are the best place to go. They will do the job without the rip off because they want to sell you a truck in the future, and their reason for being is not just rebuilding transmissions.

is it running rough at all? i had a similar problem as you're describing, along with a high idle and rough running. turned out to be 5 bent pushrods. the truck just didnt have enough *** to kick itself into overdrive. problem solved after i rebuilt the top end. now both my fuel pumps are dead...fml. hope your luck is better than mine.
