Default gear shifter.

I have a 1992 Ford F-150 4x4 xlt and when I bought it the gear shifter is messed up. when its in park, its says its in first and when you shift into any other gear, it doesn't show on the gear selector thing. I'm not sure how to fix it. can someone help?
thanks.
Thomas.

It requires removal of the instrument panel, mine had a broken tab for the spring to connect to. I drilled a new hole it works pretty close on all except first I believe. The linkage under the dash was also loose and wouldn't make park switch for engine to start.

There are two bolts at the bottom of the shift tube that are prone to get loose every so often. Lie face-up on the floor board driver side. I think they are T-10 bolts. Take them out one at a time and put a little lock-tite on the thread then tighten them down good.
