Default Gas gauge problems

So for the past few weeks the gas gauge on my '94 4.9l dual tanks hasn't been working. I only use the front tank because the back one leaks. When I fill up the tank the gauge wouldn't move from E until I shake physically shake the truck. Then it would be fine and work until I fill up again, like the float is getting stuck at the bottom. Well this last time I filled up the gauge didn't go up at all. No matter how much I shook the truck. I haven't dropped the tank yet, but I suspect the float either came off the arm or it has a hole in it. What do you guys think? And how hard is it to change a float?

Float gone, when I pulled my tank the float was melted or disinergrated.

Makes sense that the float has a hole in it. Because its sitting on "E" its logged with gas and probably just sunken.

Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking. I'm just worried about how hard it will be to fix. I'm at college so right now all I have is a driveway and hand tools. How hard will it be for me to drop the tank?

Its pretty easy,,, I had dropped mine in the street and muscled them down... But I read a guys thread on here that used tie down straps to help lower it. (especially the back) I thought that sounded like a pretty brilliant idea.

That is a pretty brilliant idea. Well saturday's project may have just been figured out, or when I get some free time. Is the float in the gas pump or is it a separate thing in the tank?
