Fuel Pump Noise
Hello,
I have a 1990 F150 with the I-6. I have owned the truck for 5 months. I have an in tank fuel pump. When the truck is running, the fuel pump is very loud. If I have the truck running across the street, and I'm by the front door of my house, I can hear the fuel pump whirring away. It doesn't seem to change wheter the tank is full or almost empty. Is this noise normal?
Thanks,
Kevin C

Welcome to the site! Always like to see the owners of the older model years coming on-board.
To your question about the fuel pump - in short, no, this is not normal.
Typically won't hear the fuel pump running over any of the other sounds of the truck running. Will hear a short 1-2 second 'whirr' when it charges the fuel lines prior to a start, but even then, have to listen for it - and certainly not from across the street.
Suggest that its time is short, but hard to tell whether it will fail in the next couple of months, or the very next time you go to start it up.
Only other thoughts that come to mind are the fuel filter condition and the fuel rail pressure - on the off-chance that the pump is really having to overexert itself for whatever reason.
