Default Is this a tank selector unit problem?

1988 F150 2wd 351w with dual tanks

Been having an issue with the fuel system in my truck. When switched on the front tank, the Truck will run fine for a few miles then stutter and hesitate like it wants to die. There is also an audible humming noise when running off the front tank that seems louder than it should be? If i immediatly switch to the rear tank it will stop stuttering and drive fine. I don't like leaving it on the rear tank because the rear fuel gauge does not work and is pegged out to the far right past the full mark.

Also when i parked the truck last time the front tank gauge showed a hair under half a tank, and today while driving it had 3/4 of a tank?? Im afraid to fill the rear if its just gonna leak into the front tank. Any ideas appreciated!

Sending unit on your front fuel pump. Solution is to replace fuel pump.

Yes, it's likely a failing DFR (Dual-Function Reservoir; a.k.a. tank select valve), and possibly a failing low-pressure pump in the front tank. Read this page & the NEXT two dozen:
