Default fuel gauge problem

I have a 94 six f150 and my fuel gauge for the most part works fine. Every couple days it will read empty even though it is almost full. When it gets to a half tank it starts working again. Any ideas?

The sender in the tank might be going.

Thank you. Is it an easy repair?

Define "easy"

There are 2 ways to accomplish this. One is to remove the bed of the truck and access the tanks. Two, drop the tank.

This is something I will be doing this fall with my '87 F150. I had thought about removing the bed but the truck is from MN, and the bolts are extremely rusted, I may drop the tank, but I don't know yet.
